Week 35: Long U and Review Activities

Week 35 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum focuses on the long vowel U (as in unicycle and ukulele) and a review of the vowels and alphabet. Please note that the short vowel sound of U was previously covered in Week 26.

Long U and Review Activities: Day 1

Today’s activities focus on the long vowel U.

  • Say to your child: “Today is Monday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
  • Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
  • On workbook page 176, have your child write his/her name on the top line and trace and write the letter U. Read the words under the pictures to him.
  • Watch Unicorns in Uniforms by Russell Punter.
  • Watch The Lion and the Unicorn. Encourage your child to sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional long vowel U activities near the end of this page (below Day 5).

  • Say to your child: “Today is Tuesday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
  • Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
  • Watch A Unicorn on a Unicycle by Lynda Graham Barber.
  • On workbook page 177, have your child count the wheels on each mode of transportation and trace the numbers. Then, help him count the total number of wheels on the page and trace the number 20.
  • Watch The Lion and the Unicorn and sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional long vowel U activities near the end of this page (below Day 5).

Long U and Review Activities: Day 3

Today is a review day.

  • Say to your child: “Today is Wednesday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
  • Watch These Are the Short Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
  • Have your child write his/her name at the top of workbook page 178. Then, on the left side of the page, help him match the short vowels to the picture that begins with its sound. E is already done. (Do not do the right side of the page yet.)
  • Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
  • On the right side of workbook page 178, help your child match the long vowels to the picture that begins with its sound.
  • Watch Can U Save the Day? by Shannon Stocker.
  • Watch The Lion and the Unicorn and sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional review activities near the end of this page (below the long U activities).

Long U and Review Activities: Day 4

Today is a review day.

  • Say to your child: “Today is Thursday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
  • Watch The Alphabet Song by Jack Hartmann.
  • Workbook page 179 reviews letters from earlier in the curriculum. Have your child trace the letters and help him/her match the letters to the picture beginning with the letter’s sound. The first one is already done.
  • Watch Mel read Alpha Oops! The Day Z Went First by Alethea Kontis.
  • Count aloud from zero to twenty with your child.
  • Watch The Lion and the Unicorn and sing along.

  • Say to your child: “Today is Friday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
  • Watch the Alphabet Phonics Song by Hopscotch.
  • On workbook page 180, have your child trace the uppercase alphabet. If this is too much writing at once, you could have him do the first two lines now and the last two lines after watching Z is for Moose.
  • Watch Z is for Moose by Kelly Bingham.
  • Watch The Lion and the Unicorn and sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional review activities near the end of this page (below the long U activities).
