Week 1: Free Alphabet Activities

Welcome to Week 1 of Freedom Homeschooling’s Letter of the Week preschool curriculum!

If you are new to the Letter of the Week curriculum, please start here for information, the supply list, and the free 185-page downloadable workbook that accompanies the curriculum.

 

Week 1: Free Alphabet Activities

Week 1 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum introduces the alphabet.

 

Alphabet Activities: Day 1

  • Explain to your child that this year, he/she will learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds each one makes.
  • Watch ABCs for Kids | Alphabet Song.
  • Watch Miss Angie read Eyes, Nose, Fingers, and Toes by Judy Hindley.
  • Watch Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. Encourage your child to sing along and do the motions. Replay the video a couple of times if your child likes.
  • On page 1 of the workbook, write your child’s name, age, and date in the blanks for him. Ask your child to draw himself.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

 

Alphabet Activities: Day 2

  • Watch the Alphabet Song and sing along. The video will start at 2:21, when the song begins.
  • Watch Curious George Learns the Alphabet by H.A. Rey. Throughout the book, George takes breaks from learning the alphabet. If you’d like, pause the video to toss a ball with your child or grab a snack when George does.
  • Watch Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, sing along, and do the motions.
  • Have your child draw a picture of your family on page 2 of the workbook.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list near the end of this page.

 

Alphabet Activities: Day 3

  • Watch the Alphabet Song and sing along.
  • Watch The Alphabet Book by P.D. Eastman.
  • Have your child color the picture on page 3 of the workbook.
  • Watch Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, sing along, and do the motions.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list near the end of this page.

Alphabet Activities: Day 4

  • Watch the Alphabet Song and sing along.
  • Watch Shapes Roll by Karen Nagel.
  • Challenge your child to find shapes in your home, yard, or on a walk around your neighborhood or park. You could turn it into a game of I Spy.
  • Have your child trace the shapes on page 4 of the workbook. Read the words under each shape to him/her.
  • Watch Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, sing along, and do the motions.

Additional Alphabet Activities

This introductory week is intentionally light. Weeks two through thirty-five will include more activities related to that week’s specific letter.
