Week 18: Letter O Activities
Week 18 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum covers the letter O and the number fourteen. This week will focus on the short O sound (as in octopus and ostrich). The long O sound (as in over and ocean) will be covered in Week 34.
In Week 18, your child will also learn about opposites, occupations, octopuses, and more.
Letter O Activities: Day 1
- Sing the alphabet song with your child.
- Learn about the letter O on Starfall. On each screen of this interactive activity, your child will need to click the letter O, wait for the animation to play, or complete the activity to get the green arrow to appear. Then, he/she will click the green arrow to go to the next screen.
- Show your child how to write an upper and lowercase O, and have him complete the worksheet on page 86 of the workbook.
- Watch Curious George’s Opposites by H.A. Rey. Ask your child if he can think of any more opposites.
- Watch On Top of Spaghetti. Encourage your child to sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.
Letter O Activities: Day 2
- Watch the Oscar Otter Phonics Song.
- Watch Oscar Otter by Nathaniel Benchley.
- Show your child how to write the number 14. On workbook page 87, have him/her trace the 14s and use a dot marker to mark fourteen boxes in the ten frames. You may want to place something under the worksheet to protect your table, because the dot markers tend to soak through paper.
- Practice counting to fourteen with your child using blocks, beads, or other household objects.
- Watch Alphabet Occupations Song by Jack Hartmann.
- Watch On Top of Spaghetti and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.
Letter O Activities: Day 3
- Watch On Top of Spaghetti and sing along.
- Watch Teacher Molly read Tickly Octopus by Ruth Galloway.
- On workbook page 88, help your child trace and write the letter O. Read the words under the pictures to him/her.
- Watch Dixy read I Am an Octopus by Trisha Speed Shaskan to learn about the life of a common octopusopus.

Letter N Review
If your child has completed all the Week 18 activities, and time allows, you may want to spend some time reviewing Week 17, which covered the letter N. However, if you do not get a chance to review Week 17, it is okay. Week 19 of the Letter of the Week preschool curriculum will review weeks 14 through 18.
