Week 34: Free Long I and O Activities

Welcome to Week 34 of Freedom Homeschooling’s Letter of the Week preschool curriculum!

Week 34 Long I and O Activities
Week 34 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum focuses on the long vowel I (as in ice cream and island) and the long vowel O (as in ocean and over). The short vowel I was covered in Week 11, and the short vowel O was covered in Week 18.
In Week 34, your child will learn about islands, ocean animals, meadow animals, sorting, and more. Your child will also continue to review the days of the week.
Long I and O Activities: Day 1
Today is a review day.
- Sing the alphabet song with your child.
- Watch the Vowel Song: Long and Short Vowel Sounds by Scratch Garden.
- On workbook page 171, have your child write his/her name at the top and help him find and circle the vowels. When he’s finished, explain that all the letters he didn’t circle are called consonants.
- Watch The Little i Who Lost His Dot by Kimberlee Gard.
- Watch Old MacDonald Had a Farm. Encourage your child to sing along.
Long I and O Activities: Day 2
Today’s activities focus on the long vowel I.
- Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song and sing along. The video will start at 0:21, when the song begins.
- Say to your child: “Today is Tuesday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
- Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
- On workbook page 172, have your child write his/her name on the top line and trace and write the letter I. Read the words under the pictures to him.
- Watch Anne Miranda read The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown.
- Watch Old MacDonald Had a Farm and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional long vowel I activities near the end of this page (below Day 5).

Long I and O Activities: Day 3
Today’s activities focus on the long vowel I.
- Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
- Watch Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop by Margaret and H.A. Rey.
- Count aloud with your child from zero to twenty.
- On workbook page 173, have your child count the ice cream cones and write the numbers.
- Watch Old MacDonald Had a Farm and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional long vowel I activities near the end of this page (below Day 5).
Long I and O Activities: Day 4
Today’s activities focus on the long vowel O.
- Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song and sing along.
- Say to your child: “Today is Thursday (or substitute the correct day). What was yesterday? What will tomorrow be?”
- Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
- On workbook page 174, have your child write his/her name on the top line and trace and write the letter O. Read the words under the pictures to him.
- Watch Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef by Marianne Burks.

Long I and O Activities: Day 5
Today’s activities focus on the long vowel O.
- Watch These Are the Long Vowel Sounds by Jack Hartmann.
- Read Over in the Meadow to your child. You will find the book listed under “2nd and 3rd Grade Books.” It’s a PDF download.
- On workbook page 175, help your child match the animals from today’s and yesterday’s read alouds to their homes. The first one is already done. (The stingray, eel, octopus, dolphin, and clownfish live in the ocean. The frog, bee, spider, bluebird, and lizard live in the meadow.)
- Read Old Mother Hubbard on page 48 of The Real Mother Goose.
- Count aloud with your child from zero to twenty.
- Watch Old MacDonald Had a Farm and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional long vowel O activities near the end of this page (below the long I activities).
Additional Long Vowel I Activities
- Writing- Have your child practice writing the letter I with his/her finger in a tray of sand, rice, or dried beans.
- Arts and crafts- ice painting or ice cream cone craft
- Science/STEM- ice activities
- Field trip- ice skating rink or ice cream shop
- Recipe- ice cream in a bag
- Snacks- ice pops or iced cookies
Additional Long Vowel O Activities
- Writing- Have your child practice writing the letter O with his/her finger in a tray of sand, rice, or dried beans.
- Arts and crafts- ocean painting or oatmeal clay
- Science/STEM- ocean in a bottle
- Field trip- scenic overlook or ocean (if nearby)
- Recipe- oatmeal raisin cookies or baked oatmeal with blueberries
- Snacks- O-shaped cereal (like Cheerios)
