Week 12: Free Letter J Activities

Welcome to Week 12 of Freedom Homeschooling’s Letter of the Week preschool curriculum!

Week 12: Letter J Activities
Week 12 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum focuses on the letter J and the number nine. In Week 12, your child will also learn about jellyfish and be introduced to the concepts of balance and weight.
Letter J Activities: Day 1
- Sing the alphabet song with your child.
- Learn about the letter J on Starfall. On each screen of this interactive activity, your child will need to click the letter J, wait for the animation to play, or complete the activity to get the green arrow to appear. Then, he/she will click the green arrow to go to the next screen.
- Show your child how to write an upper and lowercase J, and have him complete the worksheet on page 56 of the workbook.
- Watch John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. Encourage your child to sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.
Letter J Activities: Day 2
- Watch Captain Seasalt and the ABC Pirates “J” Island cartoon.
- Watch Junebug: No Life Too Small by Nicole Daniels. This story is about insects, spiders, and worms.
- Show your child how to write the number 9 and help him/her complete page 57 of the workbook.
- Practice counting to nine with your child using blocks, beads, or other household objects.
- Watch John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.
Letter J Activities: Day 3
- Watch John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt and sing along.
- On workbook page 58, help your child trace and write the letter J. Read the words under the pictures to him/her.
- Watch I Am Not a Fish by Peter Raymundo to learn about jellyfish and other ocean animals.
- Watch the Live Jellyfish Cam at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for a couple of minutes to see real jellyfish.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter J Activities: Day 4
- Sing the alphabet song with your child.
- Watch The Jellyfish Jiggle by Kayla Diamond.
- On workbook page 59, help your child write and trace the number 9s. Have your child use a dot marker to mark nine boxes of the ten frame. You may want to place something under the worksheet to protect your table, because the dot markers tend to soak through paper.
- Practice counting to nine with your child using blocks, beads, or other household objects.
- Watch John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.
Letter J Activities: Day 5
- Watch the Letter J Song by ABCmouse.
- Watch Just a Little Bit by Ann Tompert. This story introduces children to balance and comparing weights.
- On workbook page 60, have your child trace the lines to match the uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Read Jack and Jill on page 4 of The Real Mother Goose to your child.
- Watch John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt and sing along.
- Optional: Choose an additional activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list below.
Additional Letter J Activities
- Writing- Have your child practice writing the letter J or the number nine with his/her finger in a tray of sand, rice, or dried beans.
- Arts and crafts- jellyfish craft, jumping jelly bean painting, jelly bean fingerprint craft
- Science- dissolving jelly bean experiment or bubbling jelly bean experiment
- STEM- jumping experiment
- Field trip- visit the job of a family member, jellyfish at an aquarium, the jungle gym at a playground, or a Japanese restaurant
- Recipe- healthy homemade Jello, juice pops, Jello cookies
- Snacks- toast with jelly or jam, Jello, or jelly beans
Short Vowel I Review
If your child has completed all the Week 12 activities, and time allows, you may want to spend some time reviewing Week 11, which covered the short vowel I. However, if you do not get a chance to review Week 11, it is okay. Week 13 of the Letter of the Week preschool curriculum will review weeks 8 through 12.
