Week 14: Letter K Activities

Week 14 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum focuses on the letter K and the number ten. In Week 14, your child will also learn to count down from ten, how to mix paint colors to create new colors, and more.

Letter K Activities: Day 1

  • Sing the alphabet song with your child.
  • Learn about the letter K on Starfall. On each screen of this interactive activity, your child will need to click the letter K, wait for the animation to play, or complete the activity to get the green arrow to appear. Then, he/she will click the green arrow to go to the next screen.
  • Show your child how to write an upper and lowercase K, and have him complete the worksheet on page 66 of the workbook.
  • Watch Ten in the Bed. Encourage your child to sing along. This song provides practice in counting down from ten.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter K Activities: Day 2

  • Watch Captain Seasalt and the ABC Pirates “K” Island cartoon.
  • Read Teddy Bears Count to Ten by Allyn Fisher to your child. This story counts to ten, adding one bear on each page to introduce simple addition. You will find the ebook about halfway down the list in the Pre-K Story Collection. It’s available in PDF and ePUB formats.
  • Show your child how to write the number 10 and help him/her complete page 67 of the workbook.
  • Watch Ten in the Bed and sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter K Activities: Day 3

  • Watch Ten in the Bed and sing along.
  • Watch The King, The Mice, and the Cheese by Nancy and Eric Gurney
  • On workbook page 68, help your child trace and write the letter K. Read the words under the pictures to him/her.
  • Watch Miss Kristi read Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? by Eric Carle. (If you are teaching a child who doesn’t have a mother in his life, you will probably want to skip this read aloud.)
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter K Activities: Day 4

  • Watch Ten in the Bed and sing along.
  • On workbook page 69, help your child write and trace the number 10s. Have your child use a dot marker to mark ten boxes of the ten frame. You may want to place something under the worksheet to protect your table, because the dot markers tend to soak through paper.
  • Practice counting to ten with your child using blocks, beads, or other household objects.
  • Read The Kite by Harry Behn to your child.
  • Watch Will Hillenbrand, author and illustrator of the book, read Kite Day: A Bear and Mole Story.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter K Activities: Day 5

  • Watch the Letter K Phonics Song by Little Fox.
  • Watch The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown to learn about mixing paint colors to create new colors.
  • Read the words on workbook page 70 to your child. Have him/her color the pictures. Ask if he remembers which colors the kittens in the story mixed to make the colors on the worksheet.
  • Watch Ten in the Bed and sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an additional activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list below.
