Week 28: Letter W Activities

Week 28 of our Letter of the Week preschool curriculum focuses on the letter W. This week, your child will begin to learn the days of the week and tally marks. Both of these concepts will continue for several weeks, so don’t worry if your child doesn’t grasp them this week. In Week 28, your child will also learn about Washington, DC, patterns, and more.

Letter W Activities: Day 1

  • Sing the alphabet song with your child.
  • Learn about the letter W on Starfall. On each screen of this interactive activity, your child will need to click the letter W, wait for the animation to play, or complete the activity to get the green arrow to appear. Then, he/she will click the green arrow to go to the next screen.
  • Read Wookchuck to your child or click the ear to listen to the tounge twister.
  • Show your child how to write an upper and lowercase W, and have him complete the worksheet on page 137 of the workbook.
  • Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song. The video will start at 0:21, when the song begins.
  • On workbook page 138, help your child write his first name on the top line of the page. If necessary, write his name on the line so he can trace it. Use only the top line today, as you will use the rest of the lines throughout the week.
  • Watch The Wheels on the Bus. Teach your child the hand motions and encourage him to sing along.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter W Activities: Day 2

  • Watch Captain Seasalt and the ABC Pirates “W” Island cartoon.
  • On workbook page 138, help your child write his/her first name on the second line of the page. Only use the second line today, as you will use the rest of the lines throughout the week.
  • Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song.
  • To introduce tally marks, have your child count twenty pencils. Stop at five and explain that we can show five by crossing the fifth pencil over the other four. Stop at ten, fifteen, and twenty to show this again. (Toothpicks also work well for this activity.) Then, demonstrate to your child how to write tally marks on paper as you count aloud to twenty. However, don’t try to teach skip counting by five or go into an in-depth lesson on tally marks in preschool.
  • On workbook page 139, have your child match the numbers to the correct tally marks. The first one is already done.
  • Sing The Wheels on the Bus while doing the hand motions.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Using Pencils to Teach Tally Marks in Preschool

Letter W Activities: Day 3

  • Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song. Encourage your child to sing along.
  • On workbook page 138, help your child write his/her first name on the third line of the page. Only use the third line today.
  • Read Little Mouse’s Winter Countdown by Allyn Fisher to your child. This story introduces the days of the week and the calendar as Little Mouse counts down to winter. You will find the ebook about three-fourths of the way down the list in the Pre-K Story Collection. It’s available in PDF and ePub formats.
  • On workbook page 140, help your child trace and write the letter W. Read the words under the pictures to him.
  • Count to twenty with your child using pencils (or toothpicks). When you get to five, ten, fifteen, and twenty, stop and have him lay the fifth pencil across the previous four pencils, like we do when making tally marks.
  • Sing The Wheels on the Bus while doing the hand motions.
  • Optional: Choose an activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list of additional activities near the end of this page.

Letter W Activities: Day 4

  • Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song and sing along.
  • On workbook page 138, help your child write his/her first name on the fourth line of the page. Only use the fourth line today.
  • Watch Rooster’s Off to See the World by Eric Carle. Throughout the book, animals will join and leave the Rooster’s trip. Pause the video after the reader finishes each page, and have your child count the animals in the upper corner of the page to find the total number of animals currently on the journey.
  • Workbook page 141 reviews letters from earlier this year. Have your child trace the letters and help him match the letters to the picture beginning with the letter’s sound. The first one is already done. It’s okay if he doesn’t remember all the letters or their sounds.
  • Watch Washington DC: US Capitol for Children.

Letter W Activities: Day 5

  • Watch Finny the Shark’s Days of the Week Song and sing along.
  • Watch Janice read Worm’s Wagon by Samantha Berger.
  • On workbook page 138, help your child write his/her first name on the last line of the page.
  • Watch Work It out Wombats! | Pattern Song.
  • On workbook page 142, read the instructions in each section to your child and help him make the patterns.
  • Optional: Choose an additional activity, a recipe to prepare together, or a snack from the list below.

Letter V Review

If your child has completed all the Week 28 activities, and time allows, you may want to spend some time reviewing Week 27, which covered the letter V. However, if you do not get a chance to review Week 27, it is okay. Week 32 of the Letter of the Week preschool curriculum will review weeks 26 through 31.
