How to Use the Free Japanese Curriculum List
The Japanese curriculum on this page is listed in alphabetical order. There is a suggested grade range next to the title of each curriculum resource. These are only approximate, so you may want to also consider resources above or below your child’s actual grade.
All the Christian resources on this list are labeled with a “C.” Any resource not labeled as Christian is either secular or neutral and does not teach religious beliefs unless otherwise noted.
If you would like to use any of the resources listed below, click on the curriculum’s title to visit their website. Then, follow the instructions found there to begin using the resource.
For other subjects, visit our homepage and choose a subject from the free curriculum menu found there. There are options for all the standard subjects and many electives.
Free Japanese Curriculum
Activate Your Japanese! (10th – adults)
Activate Your Japanese! is a language-learning TV program designed to encourage Japanese-language learners who have already learned basic Japanese to engage in more independent communication. The website also includes downloadable support materials.
Clozemaster (9th – adults)
Clozemaster provides Japanese vocabulary practice and listening exercises. The program presents sentences with a word missing, and students fill in the blank. While much of the content is free, a paid version is also available, offering additional features.
Cursa (8th – adults)
The Cursa app offers a large collection of Japanese language learning courses. The length and format of the courses vary, but most are video-based. The app is available on Google Play or the App Store.
Duolingo (6th – adults)
Duolingo offers interactive translation-based instruction for Japanese. The website tracks progress as students learn at their own pace. While the lessons are free, there is also a paid version that includes additional features.
edX (10th – college)
EdX, a nonprofit created by Harvard and MIT, offers several courses covering Japanese language and culture. The length and format vary from course to course, and availability changes periodically. The courses are free to audit, or certificates of completion are also available for a fee.
Elon.io (7th – adults)
This comprehensive Japanese curriculum includes text-based lessons, audio recordings, and practice exercises. While the lessons are free, a paid version offering additional features is also available.
Georgia Virtual Learning (8th – 12th)
Georgia Virtual Learning offers Japanese 1 through 3. The courses consist of online text, videos, and interactive activities. Assessments are not included.
Irasshai (8th – adults)
Irasshai is a Japanese language and culture video series. Two levels and a downloadable user guide are available. While the video lessons are free to watch, textbooks and workbooks are available for purchase.
Irodori (9th – adults)
This series of downloadable textbooks and accompanying audio files is designed to teach the basic communication skills needed for daily life and working in Japan.
The Language Guide (5th – adults)
The Language Guide uses text, audio lessons, and interactive activities to teach Japanese vocabulary and grammar.
Learn 101 (6th – adults)
Learn 101 provides a series of Japanese vocabulary and grammar lessons that include audio recordings to assist with pronunciation.
LibreTexts (10th – college)
This collection of online college-level textbooks includes introductory Japanese and Japanese for professionals. Some of the textbooks could also be used with high school students.
Loecsen (4th – adults)
Loecsen offers beginner and intermediate Japanese. The lessons include audio recordings from native speakers, reading & listening exercises, memory quizzes, and more. While the lessons are free, there is also a paid version that includes additional features.
Minato (7th – adults)
Minato provides a large collection of self-study Japanese courses designed specifically for English speakers and for speakers of several other languages.
NHK World Japan (6th – adults)
NHK World offers a series of 48 audio lessons that include PDF downloads. The lessons teach basic grammar and useful expressions while centering around the daily interactions of a university student studying Japanese in Tokyo. The site also has other lessons and resources to assist with learning Japanese.
Visualizing Japanese Grammar (8th – adults)
This course introduces Japanese grammar and language skills. Each unit includes a video lesson, word list, and quiz.
