Welcome to our list of free English as a second language (ESL) curriculum! Below, you’ll find free ESL curriculum for all ages.
How to Use the Free English as a Second Language Curriculum List
The English as a second language curriculum on this page is listed in alphabetical order. There is a suggested grade range next to the title of each curriculum resource. These are only approximate, so you may want to also consider resources above or below your child’s actual grade.
All the Christian resources on this list are labeled with a “C.” Any resource not labeled as Christian is either secular or neutral and does not teach religious beliefs unless otherwise noted.
If you would like to use any of the resources listed below, click on the curriculum’s title to visit their website. Then, follow the instructions found there to begin using the resource.
For other subjects, visit our homepage and choose a subject from the free curriculum menu found there. There are options for all the standard subjects and many electives.
Free English as a Second Language Curriculum
Beginning ESOL (7th – adults)
This digital workbook includes videos, interactive practice exercises, and reading comprehension lessons for English as a second language (ESL) students.
CK-12 (8th – adults)
CK-12 offers Basic Grammar and Intermediate Grammar online textbooks for ESL learners. The textbooks include embedded videos, practice activities, and links to additional practice.
Cursa (8th – adults)
The Cursa app offers a large collection of English as a second language courses. The length and format of the courses vary, but most are video-based. The app is available on Google Play or the App Store.
Duolingo (6th – adults)
Duolingo offers interactive translation-based instruction for English. The website tracks progress as students learn at their own pace. While the lessons are free, there is also a paid version that includes additional features.
edX (10th – college)
This nonprofit, created by Harvard and MIT, offers several ESL courses. The length and format vary from course to course, and availability changes periodically. The courses are free to audit, or certificates of completion are also available for a fee.
English Activities (K – adults)
This website provides lessons, practice games, and tests for over 100 English topics.
English 4U (6th – adults)
English 4U has a series of three downloadable English grammar workbooks that progress in difficulty. The site also provides online grammar and reading exercises, vocabulary quizzes, and more.
English Listening Lesson Library Online (6th – adults)
ELLLO provides over 3,000 listening lessons for all levels of English. Most lessons include a transcript, a vocabulary lesson, and an interactive quiz. There are also mini courses, printables, and other resources. While these materials are free, the site offers additional fee-based courses.
English Page (6th – adults)
This website has a large collection of English grammar and vocabulary lessons and practice exercises. It also has online flashcards and a grammar reference guide.
Fun Easy English (1st – adults)
The classroom section of this website has an ESL video lesson with a transcript for every day of the year. These daily lessons are aimed more at adult learners, but could also be used by teens. The site also has pronunciation and conversation video lessons that could be used by a wide range of ages, alphabet lessons specifically for kids, and much more.
inglés.com (5th – adults)
Inglés.com provides interactive English lessons for Spanish speakers. The lessons cover grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and more. While the site is free to use, there is a premium version that offers additional features and an ad-free experience.
Internet Second Language Collective (K – adults)
The iSLCollective is a community of ESL teachers who share their English learning resources. The site has worksheets, video lessons, interactive quizzes, and PowerPoint presentations. Grade or level varies by resource.
The Language Guide (5th – adults)
This website uses text, audio lessons, and interactive activities to teach English vocabulary and grammar.
Language Transfer (8th – adults)
Inglés para Hispanohablantes is an introductory English course created specifically for Spanish speakers. The course is entirely audio-based. It uses The Thinking Method, which is a Socratic Q&A teaching style. Students pause tracks to actively deconstruct concepts and build language logic themselves, rather than relying on rote memorization or note-taking.
Learn 101 (6th – adults)
This website provides a series of English vocabulary and grammar lessons that include audio recordings to assist with pronunciation.
LibreTexts (10th – college)
Several online English as a second language textbooks are available on LibreTexts. While the books are intended for college students, they could also work well with high school students.
Loecsen (4th – adults)
Loecsen offers beginner level English lessons that include audio recordings from native speakers, reading & listening exercises, memory quizzes, and more. While the lessons are free, there is also a paid version that includes additional features.
Open Learn (10th – college)
This website provides English as a second language courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. The length and format of the classes may vary.
Rong-Chang ESL (K – adults)
This website provides English listening, reading, pronunciation, and grammar practice exercises at the beginning and intermediate levels.
USA Learns (10th – adults)
These ESL courses are designed for adult learners and cover speaking, listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar. The site also offers a life skills course that teaches how to perform everyday tasks in English, such as filling out forms, reading prescription labels, calling customer service, and much more.
VOA Learning English (2nd – adults)
Let’s Learn English with Anna! is a 40-episode video course created by VOA to teach American English to children ages 8 through 12. The videos cover pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, and include printable activity sheets and lesson plans. VOA also has resources for older students and adult learners, including news articles for reading practice, pronunciation videos, and more.
