How to Use the Free Phonics Curriculum List
The phonics curriculum on this page is listed in alphabetical order. There is a suggested grade range next to the title of each curriculum resource. These are only approximate, so you may want to also consider resources above or below your child’s actual grade.
All the Christian resources on this list are labeled with a “C.” Any resource not labeled as Christian is either secular or neutral and does not teach religious beliefs unless otherwise noted.
If you would like to use any of the resources listed below, click on the curriculum’s title to visit their website. Then, follow the instructions found there to begin using the resource.
For other subjects, visit our homepage and choose a subject from the free curriculum menu found there. There are options for all the standard subjects and many electives.
Free Phonics Curriculum
Community Reading Project (3rd – 12th)
The tools on this website are designed to help older students with dyslexia and other reading challenges learn to read or improve their reading skills. There are online lessons in blending, phonics, spelling, grammar, fluency, and comprehension.
Duolingo ABC (Pre-K – 2nd)
This app, available for iOS and Android, provides a comprehensive phonics curriculum. Using a game-like format, it teaches phonics, sight words, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and more.
FreeReading (K – 5th)
This phonics curriculum can be used with kindergarten or first graders who are just beginning to read or with older students who need to improve their literacy skills. There are 40 weeks of detailed online lesson plans. The program also includes several downloadable components, including letter cards, word cards, and reading passages.
Free Word Work (Pre-K – 3rd)
Free Word Work provides printable phonics and alphabet worksheets for beginning readers. The website also has sight word lists and resources.
K12 Reader (K – 2nd)
K12 Reader offers a large selection of downloadable phonics worksheets.
Mom Delights (K & 1st)
Mom Delights provides phonics-based reading lessons in a downloadable eBook called “To The Top: Climb the Mountain of Reading.” There is also a downloadable beginning reader titled “Happy Times Reading,” which accompanies the phonics program.
Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading (K & 1st)
This reading curriculum has 120 daily video lessons that teach sight words, phonics, and word families. View the lessons by downloading the free app from Google Play or by signing up to receive the videos by email. The workbook that goes with this program is free to download, but a physical version is also available for purchase if you are unable to print the workbook.
Phonics by the Book (K – 2nd) C
Phonics by The Book is a downloadable phonics and sight word curriculum based on God’s Word. The stories begin in the book of Genesis and continue through the entire Bible. The downloads each include a reader, lesson outline, and several activities.
The Phonics Page (2nd – 12th) C
This website offers 32 video-based phonics lessons. The program is designed to improve the student’s reading and spelling by teaching them to sound words out phonetically, rather than relying on sight word memorization. The lessons should be completed in about one to two months.
Progressive Phonics (K – 3rd)
Reading is taught using downloadable phonics readers, activity pages, and flashcards. Handwriting worksheets, which correlate to phonics skills the child is learning, are also included.
Reading the Alphabet (Pre-K & K)
Each week of this 31-week beginning reading curriculum includes a downloadable lesson plan, a reader, and several activities. The program covers letters and sounds, beginning sight words, phonological awareness, fine motor skills, and more.
Reading Bear (K – 2nd)
Phonics and reading skills are taught using video-based lessons, flashcards, and quizzes.
Sound City Reading (Pre-K – 4th)
This downloadable phonics and writing curriculum includes practice books, workbooks, flashcards, games, and more.
Starfall (Pre-K – 1st)
Starfall’s ABCs page and Learn to Read page teach letter sounds and beginning reading using interactive lessons, songs, and stories. Other pages of the website also offer free activities, but access to all the website’s features will require a paid membership.
Teach a Child to Read with Children’s Books (K – 2nd)
This downloadable guide shows parents how to combine story reading, phonics, and writing to help their children become skilled readers. You will need to purchase or borrow any books you choose to use.
Teach Mommy Teach (Pre-K – 1st)
This website offers printable worksheets to accompany Bob Books Stages 1, 2, and 3. The worksheets provide additional practice in reading, letter identification, rhyming words, and more.
Teach Your Child to Read in 120 Lessons (K – 1st)
This phonics curriculum, made available by Actual Reading, teaches children to read in 120 30-minute lessons. Each day’s lesson is in a separate downloadable PDF file.
Teach Your Monster to Read (Pre-K – 1st)
This online game teaches beginning reading skills. It covers everything from letters and sounds to reading full sentences.
Teaching a Preschooler to Read (Pre-K – 4th)
This downloadable book is a complete phonics program designed to teach children to read. While the author says this book can be used with children ages 3 to 10, it looks like what would typically be considered kindergarten level phonics.
Treasure Hunt Reading (K – 2nd)
This phonics program uses instructional videos and a downloadable workbook to teach reading. Click on the “For Helpful Adults” tab for instructions and the workbook.
Under the Home (K – 2nd)
This 232-lesson phonics course is based on the free public domain book Word Mastery: A Course in Phonics for the First Three Grades. Detailed teacher instructions are included.
Word Mastery: A Course in Phonics for the First Three Grades (K – 3rd)
Word Mastery is a classic phonics textbook that is available for download.
