Free Homeschool Typing Curriculum

Big Brown Bear  (3rd – adults)

This website offers over 50 touch typing lessons that start with the home row and gradually cover the entire keyboard. Students can also play a timed keyboard game where they find and type highlighted keys. This is a UK website, so US users may notice occasional spelling differences.

Dance Mat Typing  (1st – 5th)

Animated characters guide students through touch typing lessons. The program has four levels, each with three stages. Each stage reviews previously covered keys before introducing new ones. This is a UK website, so US users may notice some spelling differences.

Keybr  (5th – adults)

Keybr starts with a few common letters and adds new ones as students reach their target speed. The program tracks speed and accuracy and builds lessons around the student’s weakest keys. Users can set a target speed, choose how errors are handled, practice with their own text, and race other typists. Progress is saved in the browser or, with an account, across devices. While the lessons are free, a paid premium account that removes ads is also available.

KidzType  (1st – 12th)

This website offers typing lessons organized by keyboard row, along with practice exercises and typing games. A link takes students to timed typing tests on its sister site, TypeDojo, where they can earn a printable certificate.

Nitro Type  (3rd – 12th)

Nitro Type is a typing game that lets users race other typists in real time to build speed and accuracy. Parents can set up a teacher account to monitor practice time, speed, and accuracy. While the game is free, the site also offers a paid membership that removes ads.

Ratatype  (3rd – adults)

Ratatype offers interactive touch typing lessons, typing games, and a speed test. Students must pass each lesson before advancing to the next. Parents can create a class to track their child’s progress. The free version limits users to 10 exercises per day. A paid membership provides unlimited exercises, no ads, typing speed certificates, and dark mode.

Sense-Lang  (5th – adult)

This website has typing lessons, animated tutorials, games, and a speed test. Students can also practice on the numeric keypad, take an audio course combining typing and spelling, and earn a typing certificate. The lessons are available in several languages.

Speed Typing Online  (3rd – adults)

This website offers two sets of typing lessons: classic drills for beginners and faster-paced advanced lessons using real words. Users can also create custom lessons for the keys they want to practice. A free account lets users set speed and accuracy goals, track completed lessons, and receive suggestions for what to practice next. The site also offers typing games and speed tests. The lessons are free, but a paid membership removes ads and adds additional features.

Sylladot  (3rd – 5th)

Sylladot’s typing curriculum includes downloadable student workbooks and scripted instruction manuals for each of the three levels, allowing children to practice typing offline. Each level includes about 100 days of 15-minute lessons. While the PDF downloads are free, you can also purchase physical books.

Tastenflow  (2nd – adults)

Tastenflow’s touch typing lessons begin with the home row and progress to the full alphabet, numbers, and punctuation. Each exercise adapts to the user’s progress. Users can also type stories and play games. The program supports users at all vision levels with spoken instructions, screen magnification, and screen reader support. Parents can create a class to set weekly goals and monitor practice time and progress.

Turtle Diary  (2nd – 8th)

This website offers typing lessons for beginners, intermediates, and advanced learners. Lessons start with the home row keys and progress to sentences, paragraphs, and speed goals of up to 60 words per minute. With a free account, students can save their progress and view typing reports. A paid membership is also available to remove ads.

TypeDojo  (2nd – adults)

Lessons on TypeDojo begin with the home row keys. At the end of each level, students take a short test before moving ahead. The site also offers speed tests that end with a printable certificate. TypeTastic  (K – 12th)

TypeTastic offers more than 700 typing lessons and activities, organized by grade level. Students progress from keyboard games and motor-skill practice to touch typing, number and symbol practice, and timed tests. A color-coded keyboard map helps younger students find keys. The website is free to use, but the paid School Edition adds student logins, progress tracking, and custom typing tests.

Type the Word  (6th – adults)  C

This website lets students practice typing Bible passages in 14 translations of their choice. The site tracks typed passages, practice frequency, and speed. Students can also use the memorization mode to learn Scripture. While the website is free to use, a paid school program adds touch typing lessons and student progress reports.

Typing Academy  (3rd – adults)

Typing Academy teaches typing through interactive exercises that repeat the user’s frequent mistakes. An on-screen keyboard shows which finger to use so users don’t need to look down at their hands. The website tracks progress. While the lessons are free, a paid membership unlocks additional lessons and provides an ad-free experience.

Typing Club  (2nd – 8th)

Typing Club teaches typing through interactive lessons that include games, videos, and typing challenges. Hand diagrams show proper finger placement, and students can replay their past attempts. Students can create a profile to save their progress. The lessons are free, but a paid membership removes ads and adds additional features.

TypingTest.com  (3rd – adults)

This website provides typing speed tests and a step-by-step typing course that introduces a few new keys in each lesson. The course creates review drills from words students struggle with. A Tricky Keys analysis identifies problem keys for extra practice. With an account, students can save their typing history, track goals, and earn badges.

typing.com  (K – adults)

Typing.com teaches touch typing through interactive lessons, typing games, and timed tests. Parents can set up a homeschool account to track progress, add custom lessons, and give timed tests. While the typing lessons are free, a paid membership removes ads and adds cross-curricular typing practice, writing prompts, and lessons in digital citizenship, coding, and computer skills.
